I liked it too!

It's a cracking little film.

reply

Underrated, underappreciated, underpublicized. So little known, the DVD came as a big, if welcome, surprise. A well-made, thoughtful film that deserves a wide audience. Spread the word!

reply

I've always considered it a cult classic but until I saw this message board, I had no idea just how small its cult was.

reply

Small but dedicated. But please -- we're definitely not a cult, and the film is certainly not a "cult classic". PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE is a cult classic. THE PURPLE PLAIN is a solid drama that too few people know about.

You're right about TCM, but you should read the comments on IMDb about the print of the film they ran right before THE PURPLE PLAIN last night -- THE NAKED PREY. Viewers have been raking TCM over the coals for the poor quality of their edited version of that film.

reply

How about you don't lecture me on what is and is not a "cult classic" and I don't lecture you on the drawbacks of taking a light-hearted remark on a movie message board too literally.

I bet you really really identify with Blore, don't you?

reply

What the hell's with the attitude? I did NOT "lecture" you on anything: that's crap. Your remark may have been light-hearted but it certainly doesn't read that way; it seemed like a straightforward comment, but what's the big deal anyway? I made a simple comment on what you wrote, not a criticism, and mine was at least as "light-hearted" and unserious as what you wrote...actually, much more obviously so. "Lecture"? That's asinine. I wrote a perfectly friendly response to a perfectly decent post, and certainly no personal attack was made or implied, let alone a lecture.

If you're this hypersensitive that you lash out with gratuitously nasty remarks at anyone who's done nothing more than what you've done then perhaps you shouldn't post anything on these boards. Believe me, had I or anyone else wanted to give you a lecture or criticize you you'd have known it.

Oh, as to Blore...no, I didn't care for him, but his propensity to criticize, his humorlessness, his inability to understand others and his smug nastiness seem more up your alley. I'm not and wasn't looking for a fight, but your reply is so personally vicious and such an overreaction -- to NOTHING -- that I'm frankly stunned by it. Why don't you take your own advice about "the drawbacks of taking a light-hearted remark on a movie message board too literally"?

reply

One man's CULT CLASSIC is another man's LITTLE SEEN DRAMA.

I would expect this behavior on an American blockbuster movie comments page, but not for this film.

Now you both should be sent to your tents in Burma without evening chow.

As to the actress playing ANNA, she is really from BURMA and became a NUN soon after filming this movie.

She was very RADIANT in this film. Of course they used that dreamy lens when showing her up close, but still...

Well put Layton. Never heard of this film but definitely a nice drama, well acted. Don't make them like this anymore sadly.

I read some of the reviews. One complained about the ending, about Forrester reaching the river and then the scene shifts back to the base, where the doctor reports that Forrester and the navigator have been rescued and are on their way home.

I immediately thought of the scene in Lawrence of Arabia, where Lawrence crosses the Sinai and first sees the Suez Canal. Then the scene shifted to Cairo.

My point is, we did not need to see all the details of the rescue, and it did not detract from the film.

My review: a very good movie, but not a great one.

reply

I thought the end felt very rushed and out of rhythm.

reply

Not a big fan of the "dreamy" lens!

reply

I love this movie also but the main thing I love is that fantastic wooden
mosquito. I have every movie I can find with that airplane. People always
praise the Spitfire but that Mosquito could fly 400mph and also carry 4000lbs
of bombs.

reply

I loved that plane, too. My only problem with it was, that it wasn't purple.

He shots ... he scores!!!

Where is the repartee like this anymore ... seems like none on Moviechat.
