Japanese Sailor They Capture

The scenes where the group captures the Japanese sailor are horrible. First he just appears out of nowhere, just strolling along a trail. Then they make the guy a propaganda caricature; all toothy smiles and deep bows. His only line is that he wants to go to “Hollywoody.” They tie him up and then immediately untie him. He walks with them and serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever to the story. All we know about him is that he’s trying to desert from the Japanese Navy and loves Hollywood and is apparently willing to help them. So what do they do? They use him as a form of payment to some native islander who will lead them through the jungle in exchange for being able to torture the guy as he cries and whimpers in terror. Every minute the guy is on screen, it’s horrible.
