Rusty's Hat


Was it common to have the brim of a hat pinned up in front like his hat was? Since one reason for wearing a hat was to keep the sun out of one's eyes, this would seem to be counterproductive.

is an image from the US Civil War of a boy wearing a similar hat with the brim turned up in front. It reminded me of Rusty's hat when I first saw it.

And at least one photo in the article shows several hats worn that way. So that was one possible way to wear a broad brimmed hat in those days and some people did wear them that way.
