Very well done *SPOILERS*

And Tom and Elizabeth were a cute couple. :( Too bad he died. I was really sad.

In real life, Seymour was sort of a nasty guy who tried to use women to get ahead in life. In addition to his marriage to Catherine Parr, he also proposed to the Lady Mary (Elizabeth's half-sister), Elizabeth who was 14 at the time, and Lady Anne of Cleves (Henry VIII's discarded wife). In the end he was arrested while trying to force entry into King Edward's apartments in order to try and persuade the king forcibly to marry the Lady Jane Grey. He shot Edward's dog into the bargain. I think Elizabeth summed it up best when she said (of his death) "Today died a man of much wit and very little judgement" (or something to that effect.)

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Well, that certainly alters my opinion of him. Whatever, the MOVIE was good then.

Thanks for the info, by the way!

The Lord Admiral, Baron Thomas Seymour was a rogue, but there was much more to him than his faults (very ambitious and sometimes lacking in judgement). I feel that he has been quite villified by historians. There were many facets to the man.
He was a very good and loving husband to Katherine Parr for one, and I think that in the end he did love Young Elizabeth.
He was suave, handsome and among other things, a good naval officer and diplomat.
I wonder often how his life would have proceeded if he had not been caught trying to kidnap the king, a supremely stupid move (he was always trying to best his brother Edward, The Protector), and been executed for his folly.
He and Katherine Parr had a daughter, Mary. No one really knows what became of her.

I've read that Mary was said to have died at a very young age.

In real life Elizbth had scarlet fever and lost most of her hair. It is too bad that she was never as beautiful as Jean Simmons with that great red hair. Seems that having to wear a wig did not affect Queen Elizabeth's love life... especially with the Earl of Essex... and rumored others also.

This is the best acting I've ever seen from Jean Simmons by far!! She doesn't look like Elizabeth, but I came to overlook that in the course of viewing the film.

What's that got to do with the comment posted? The OP is talking about the movie.

I've read a number of books on the Tudor dynasty, including a biography of Elizabeth I. In fact, she came down with small pox in her youth and nearly died. The resulting pox scars made her wear the stark white, pancake-seeming makeup she is so famous for in her portraits. Same with the ruffled collar, she had scars plus thought she had a scrawny neck.

reply

However, as a young girl I always heard she was quite pretty and did have her father's stunning red hair.

It's an entertaining costume drama. I credit them for having such a bittersweet ending.
