why do so many people hate Wendy?!

Seriously. Movie Wendy gets hate, literary Wendy gets hate. Why? I saw for this literary heroine quiz, every single person who got Wendy as the result was dissatisfied to say the least, acting annoyed and calling her stuff like goody-goody (not really sure how that's a bad thing, especially opposed to a selfish brat like Tinker Bell... but OK ).

What is there to hate? You can look at other literary heroines even in totally different settings or not (Harriet M Welsh, Katniss, Scarlett O'Hara, Hermione, Scout Finch, Jo March) and find totally unlikeable traits or personalities, yet they get nothing but praise by their worshipping fans (and I do like Scout and Jo, btw... in fact I like their books and Harriet's and GWTW was a good movie). Wendy is a feminine, maternal, optimistic girl, and those 3 traits tend to be pretty frowned upon by most people now. It's "wrong" to be girly and motherly, and it's "stupid" to be hopeful and optimistic, as opposed to pessimistic and being depressed all the time.

I think she's a great heroine, along with Anne Shirley and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Do people just like to hate anyone who isn't a tomboy or a tramp in literature and movies or something? I prefer generally classy, gentle ones (Melanie Wilkes is becoming a new favorite) but I don't hate on heroines who are different than that!

I love Jesus AND Jesus-hating atheists and am 100% proud!

I've never had an issue with Wendy - actually, I think she HAD to be gentle, motherly and feminine because Peter Pan DID bring her to Neverland to be the boys' mother and I think her feminine traits helped reign in Peter's wild side even if it's just in the slightest.

I think in today's society there are so many portrayals of "strong" female characters that if a girl is girly she feels it's not right - but there are all sorts of girls in this world and each one is exactly who she's meant to be and I wish more shows and movies had this diversity.

I don't hate Wendy but I found her voice a bit irritating.

I had more of a problem with Peter than Wendy.

Can't stop the signal.

The Pan loves his Wendy...and Katherine Beaumont was an awesome voice for her and Alice.

I can fly, I can fight, and I can crow! I am the Pan!

she's a necessary character and is fine the way she is. but implying boisterous heroines are classless just because they aren't as gentle as you prefer is ridiculous

I don't hate Wendy. I like her. But it's funny you say Tinker Bell was a brat. She sort of was I admit but after watching it yesterday for the first time in years, I pity Tinkerbell. Cause Peter Pan is a playboy. Seriously, he romances with Wendy, romances with the mermaids, romances with Tiger Lily, but Tinkerbell gets no romance. She has every right to be angry with Peter who just uses her for her pixey dust and to send messages.

I have never heard of anyone hating Wendy. Peter Pan is obnoxious and arrogant. I find him annoying. He is supposed to be a perpetual self centered child.

I do agree somewhat. Plus there is just something disturbing about a boy who goes off to someplace for hundreds of years and never grows up.

Same goes for the Lost boys. No telling how long they all have been there.

Hence the name 'Peter Pan syndrome'. I love Peter Pan, especially the Disney version because he's so cute and heroic and fun. and I definitely agree with you on why Tinkerbell was so jealous and annoyed with Wendy. She literally gets friendzone the minute the next new thing comes about. But she stays by his side no matter what.

I think the reason I always hated Wendy...not really hated but didn't care for her as a character was her constant need to change who Peter was. She's on that verge of growing up and even though Peter LOOKS like he could be her peer or the same age as her, mentally he's not and he's not ready to grow up. She never learned how to fly as good as Peter so she was always crying 'wait for me'; she also got jealous with tiger lily and then just expected everyone to act cultured; they live in a tree for crying out loud. So yea, she represents that nagging need to grow up and the way it's expressed in the cartoon just makes her annoying. I was never bothered by her femininity or things like that. I have grown to love Wendy; she's a cutie (I also love meeting her in the theme parks).
