Do you LOVE this movie?

Do the people at MGM (or whatever corporate entity owns this movie) read posts on sites such as IMDb, to get ideas of classic movies to release on DVD? If so, then everyone who loves this movie should say so and why! Because this movie really deserves to get released again. I just watched on PBS, and it was such a touching and sweet movie. I loved its whimsical innocent nature, but has a serious tone as well that keeps the sweetness factor in check. I wish I had seen the whole thing (missed the first 20 minutes or so); its one of those movies I wish I'd seen back when I was a kid, but then maybe I would not have fully appreciated it. They don't make movies like this anymore! Agree...???

Yes, I agree with you! Who knows how we can put pressure on them to release it on DVD. Who are those corporate entities anyway? Do they simply not care or are there some other impediments? I just got it on video at amazon.com. It's something, at least...

YES!!!! I love it too.

The beginning shows her when she first comes to town, and it really shows her plight. Her father had just died, and she traveled to this town to get a job with her father's old friend. She discovers that he had just died too, so now she has no one to turn to. Then a man in another shop offers her a job but he tries to take advantage of her. You're right that the serious side of the movie does keep the sweetness in check.

I absolutely love this film - its one of my all time favourites! I was first shown it when I was little and mostly remember the puppets, then a few years back I watched it and just fell in love with it! I now appreciate it in a different way, Leslie Caron and Mel Ferrer were just perfect in this film. His character even reminds me of House a little. The film looks beautiful, the song is classic, great dance scenes, wonderful story - just a great gem of a film. Luckily for me we've owned a copy of it on VHS for as long as I can remmeber so I can watch it whenever. But hopefully one day it will be released on dvd!

~No, but if we did we'd probably deep fry them!

I love this film too, I like Mel Ferrer and Leslie Caron. I couldn't help smiling while I was watching it. Even when it finished I was still happy.
I would like to read the book.

Yes, I do. I remember the enchantment from my childhood (in fact I do remember Leslie Caron talking to puppets, dancing with the "puppets" which turn to be Mel Ferrer, THE song and the final scene - not so bad for a movie seen 50 years ago, albeit a few times, it seems) and it remains my dream to see it again (and particularly - to have it on a DVD! Can you hear that, Gentlemen, we want the "Lili"!

I also am of the opinion that there is a strong similarity in the Mel Ferrer character of Paul and the title character that Hugh Laurie portrays on "House".

This is one of my favorite movies and I too have it recorded on a VHS for viewing from time to time.

I saw it first when I was little too and I loved the music. I had it on a homemade VHS tape but alas, I no longer have a working VCR. I really want to see it again.

Egad, I just saw it again on Turner Classic Movies for the first time since 1953. I was six years old; the first movie I ever saw, I think. I too remember the puppets turning into Mel Ferrer, which disturbed me at the time. A very sweet movie. Naturally, the sexual overtones went right over my head.

I just watched it for the first time (I'm 51) and found it very moving. I'm sitting here flummoxed at just how it worked. What I mean is that if it had just a little further it would have been ruined. I think the combination of cast, director, writing was kismet.

I've avoided LILI for many years - I'm almost certain that I saw a re-release of LILI in the mid-1960s and didn't like it - I was obviously much too young to appreciate it, for I caught the last 45 minutes or so of the movie today and was completely charmed. I've never been a huge fan of either Leslie Caron or of Mel Ferrer (though he appears in SCARAMOUCHE, one of my all-time favorites), but I was impressed by both of them here. One thing I liked was the clever way Charles Walters staged the dance numbers - obviously Aumont, Ferrer and Gabor weren't trained dancers, but he gave them dancing movements which, combined with Caron's dancing skill, made a very nice blend.

Yes! I must admit it's good for younger people then middle aged folk.

Whether you like it or not, they sure don't make movies like this anymore.

Kudos to the French for not remaking this movie with Audrey Tautou. Leslie Caron played "cute" in such a sincere, unaffected manner.
When I saw this as a child in the early 60s, I loved the naive Lili and thought the "adult," sparkly dress, dance scenes were boring. Seeing it again after 47 years, my opinion has not changed, though I understand why they put a few numbers in there to showcase Zsa Zsa.
It's a very nice movie for parents (or grandparents) to enjoy with their kids. I'm glad it turned up on TCM. Yes, I LOVE this movie!

one of the best obscure movies-i agree--if you dont cry watching this movie-at any given point-theres something wrong with one--and odd cast-but works well-the director tried to evoke a european look-and it works well--there is so much feeling in this movie--wouldve like to know how they did it without breaking down at various points-the production and everything about this movie is high--an experience to remember-charming--10 stars
