alfred drake was always the best lead in kiss me kate

I listened to alfred drake playing the lead in this play before I watched the movie so and drake is so incredibly good that this film was ruined for me. howard keel could just not match drake's voice. It's a shame really, drake should have been in this movie, he should have done kismet, he should have been curly in oklahoma, but hollywood didn't like him! They thought he was a broadway actor only and unsuited for the big screen. drake's version of wonderbar is so much better than keel's, were thine, where is the life, keel's is ok, but he's just no alfred drake.

I don't know if it exists on DVD, but there's a VHS tape of a 1958 "Hallmark Hall of Fame" TV show that reunites Alfred Drake and Patricia Morrison in KATE. It was taken from a kinescope and is in b&w, so the visual quality is below par. But Drake's voice and charisma still stood out.

Drake was great, but Keel equaled or surpassed him.
