tom, harry, or dick
Is it just my dirty mind, or was Ann Miller deliberately directed to pronounce "harry" as "hairy". And what about that "any dick" conclusion? How did the song get by the censors at the time?

shareThe answer's simple ... censors anywhere, at any time, are not noted for their intelligence.
But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.
Oh gosh...I used to laugh aloud at that number.....Hairy Tom or Dick...A Harry Dick..a Harry Dick...A Harry Dick.
shareI was either very innocent or naive (and still am, I guess), but I just thought it referred to the expression Tom, Dick, or Harry, as in Third Rock from the Sun. Just a common phrase.
Boo Hoo! Let me wipe away the tears with my PLASTIC hand!--Lindsey McDonald (Angel)
If there had been an award for the number of times the word "dick" is used in a song, Cole Porter would definitely have been nominated.
I think "If she says your behaviour is heinous, kick her right in the Coriolanus" is sheer genius.
"Say it with flowers . . . give her a Triffid."
