So far, it makes no sense to me

I am 40 min into the movie, and so many things make no sense that I keep hoping it will get better. First, the main character is just so high strung; she gets on my nerves. In movies women are so often depicted as hysterical wimps. You don't see her being quiet for just a moment and try to make sense of what is happening.

Spoilers:

First, the change of room. Doesn't the crew have a list of who is in which room? Can the list be changed that easily? That means that at least several of the crew members are in the secret. In real life, that seems very unlikely.

Then her husband calls to say they are both in danger, not to trust anybody. He is hiding. At that point, she knows he is alive, why does she keeps trying to find him? Finding him could put him in danger, since she doesn't know from whom he is hiding. Actually, it could save her husband to pretend that she is traveling alone.

But I have a feeling that it is the husband who is plotting something. He actually tells her that he married her for the money, in jest.

OK, I'll watch the rest to see if it gets better.
Unfortunately, it didn't get better. The hysteria got even worse. The husband calls for them to meet. First thing she tells him: we had such a nice room and it got changed. !!!

I hope someone else enjoys this movie. I wanted to like it, but have a hard time believing people would react that way.

Well, I think so, too: this is a difficult movie to try to enjoy.

It doesn't seem to work very well on various levels. Granted that Ruth sets out to enjoy her honeymoon with John (and who or what else would matter if he looks like Carl Betz?) But no one else does seem to matter to her as Kay and Paul try their hardest to attempt to understand Ruth, but yet she doesn't seem to appreciate their concern (even though John tells her to trust no one).

The ship setting (over the ocean), naturally, gives the film the dismal feeling of helplessness, and yet Ruth continuously seems to dismiss any help which she could get from the concerned parties. That doesn't seem highly plausible because even if she is told not to trust anyone, she would naturally need some moral support through her crises.

So, she's clearly not playing it for sympathy, but for the intent of finding John under the notion that he'll somehow return to the ship before it docks.

Ruth (Jeanne Crain) dismisses the help of "everyone" as her new husband told her to trust "no one" - so that is what she is doing, trusting no one..........also Ruth still believes her husband is ON the ship somewhere, but she just doesn't know where...............Ruth does trust the Doctor to a certain degree, but she is not certain about him either.

Jeanne, Toby, Mitzi, Eleanor, Frances, Deborah - are adorable - I love them all.

Their names were never listed for the 1st room. The husband made all the arrangements and he reserved a room in her maiden name only which was the 2nd cabin!

****POSSIBLE SPOILER*****

Granted, the couple got separated on the gangplank; so nobody realised they had come aboard together. BUT, how could the husband assume he wouldn't be recognized.

reply

Yes I agree with that. Also they could have been recognised while waiting to board.......surely someone would have seen them together at some point just before or during boarding.
