What happened to Sandy? (spoiler)

I know that he was captured by the Apaches when he went out to help the trooper being tortured. But that was the last I saw of him. He wasn't riding with the column at the end so I guess he was killed. But I don't think that his killing was shown or talked about.

In the last act Bannon (Heston) sneaks into the Apache camp at night and finds his sidekick, Sandy, tied to a tree dead with several arrows sticking out of his body. It's a pretty unmistakable scene so I can't see how you'd miss it, unless it was cut from the version you viewed.
