Sophia in blackface make up

I know that was the practice of the times, but I could not help think how silly she looked. The dance scenes in the movie was nice, and costumes were cool. But I lost interest due to lack of subtitles, and virtually no dialogue. I like opera to some degree, but it is nice to know what they are saying.
