THE REMAKE GAME!

I know that this has been done to death and remakes are normally terrible, but I thought of this for a little fun. If you can think of a better cast or production team then let me know.

A Jerry Brukheimer Production,

Directed by Gore Verbinski,(Both from Pirates of the Caribbean)

Music by Klaus Badelt or Hans Zimmer (Also from Pirates)

Jude Law: Rudolf Rassendyl/ Rudolf V of Ruritania

Rufus Sewell: Black Michael (Only because I liked him in the Illusionist and I can't help but seeing a slight resemblance between him and Law)

Christian Bale: Rupert of Hentzau (Although he is brilliant I'm not sure I can see him playing the young and reckless type that rupert was but I may be wrong, and I can't think of anyone else)

Scarlett Johannson: Princess Flavia (Because she has the typical fairy tale princess features i.e. blonde hair, blue eyes and light skin)

Paul Giamatti or Kelsey Grammar: Col. Sapt

Edward Norton: Fritz von Tarlenheim

Jessica Beil: Antionette de Mauban

reply

Okay, I'm not that clued up about many actors and actresses, butI am awfully fond of this book, so I'll give it a bash. I have never seen any of the Zenda films yet.

Music by James Horner (He did a great job on Zorro, which is also of a swashbuckling type)

Gerard Butler: Rudolf Rassendyl/ Rudolf V of Ruritania

Anthony Hopkins: Col. Sapt

Daniel Lapaine: Rupert of Hentzau (I saw him in "Death on the Nile"and it struck me then that he would make a PERFECT Rupert!)

Rosamund Pike or Emily Blunt: Princess Flavia

Ewan McGregor: Fritz von Tarlenheim

Minnie Driver: Antionette de Maubanmmar

Gerard Butler, interesting. I didn't even consider him. He might even make a good Rupert in my opinion, but he's now a leading man and possibly past that sorta part. Although, he did do Lara croft 2 as a semi villian and his performance in The Phantom of the Opera was very good.
Note that I think that a film version should be as true to the book as possible.

reply

Yeah, it was his performance in the "Phantom" that caught me. And I agree, he might make a good Rupert... a role that I think would be fantastic to act!

I would absolutely love it if they made a recent, true to the book version on film. And then, considering the recent fad for sequels, add "Rupert of Hentzau" to the list afterwards. Oh boy... that would be great!!!

reply

As much as I enjoy it, not everyone has read the book. We don't realize Hentzau is the main villain until roughly 2/3 of the way through. Hentzau should be cast as a break-out role, with an up-and-comer or an unknown. Casting a leading man in the role is a dead giveaway that he's the real villain.

This is my take on a remake, I just watched both the 1952 & 1937 films. Love the story. Yet hear all my cast with all European actors!

Maj. Rudolf Rassendyll / King Rudolf V = Gerard Butler(He's a Scot, doing well in period films)

Princess Flavia = Diana Kruger (She blond, German, & can act royal)

Col. Zapt = Terence Stamp (He is English, old, and I can see him playing tough veteran officer loyal to the king)

Capt. Fritz von Tarlenheim = Mikael Persbrandt (Great Swedish actor, see the Martin Beck series, he can play this role great!)

Black Michael = Sergi López (He's Spanish, and is creepy, see Pan's Labyrinth, he could pull off the 1/2 brother of Gerard Bulter)

Rupert of Hentzau = Luca Zingaretti (He is a great Italian actor, he would fit in the role of sleazy noble)

Antoinette de Mauban = Eva Green (She is French & hot, & will be able to play the opposite of Diana Kruger's Tutonic princes)

reply

Oh I was sitting around and came up with more names for the fun of it. Here is another cast of Actors.

Col. Zapt = Daniel Olbrychski (A veteran Polish actor who would play the loyal officer with old ideas)

Capt. Fritz von Tarlenheim = Dennis Storhøi (Fun actor form Norway, he would fit the role of the young officer, see him in the 13th Warrior)

Black Michael = Vincent Regan (English actor, was the Captain in 300, would be like the Black Michael in the 1937 film, older 1/2 brother of the book)

Rupert of Hentzau = Michal Zebrowski (He is a great Polish actor, he would fit in the role as a young thug noble)

Antoinette de Mauban = Monica Bellucci(She is Italian & Hot, and would just fit the role to a "T".)

Maj. Rudolf Rassendyll / King Rudolf V = ?

Princess Flavia = ?

I'll have to come back to these later. No names come to mind, well names to but they are Americans, and I'm going for a European cast in my mind :)

reply

I don't think the movie should be remade but this is still fun:

Gerard Butler: Rudolf Rassendyl/ Rudolf V of Ruritania

Christian Bale (nobody can do evil better *shudder*): Black Michael

Rufus Sewell: Rupert of Hentzau

Kate Beckinsale/Rosamund Pike : Princess Flavia

Michael Caine: Col. Sapt

James MacAvoy: Fritz von Tarlenheim

Eva Greeen: Antionette de Mauban

I stole some ideas from the other posters ;-)

reply

This not my full list but if they did a remake for the 21st century then Gerard Butler would be ideal playing the leading character in my own opinion.

reply

Rudolf Rassndyll/King Rudolf: Dan Stevens
Rupert of Hentzau: Tom Hiddleston
Colonel Zapt: Michael Caine
Michael: Pip Torrens
Fritz von Tarlenheim: Joe Absolom
Princess Flavia: Lily James

And keep the same Alfred Newman score that was used in both the 1937 and 1952 versions.
