In the original play it was Laurel, which is a real town in Mississippi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurel,_Mississippi). For the film it was changed to the fictitious Auriol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Streetcar_Named_Desire_%281951_film%29#Differences_from_the_play).
