Tommy?

Where did this expression for women used by Robert Ryan come from? He kept referring to Lizabeth Scott as a "Tommy."

reply

According to commentator on the dvd, who looked it up in the American Dictionary of Slang, it was an expression originated by WR Burnett in one of his earlier novels and meant a tomboy or manly woman.

reply

If this film were remade I'd have Scanlon call Liz Scott's character a 'tranny'.

reply

You could be right! :=)

reply

Nah, Scott was 100 percent XX vag woman.
