George Washington's Left Ear?

I thought that I was the only one who misheard the title of the film the Thunderfish traded with the other submarine, but it turns out that one son and my daughter heard it the same way. Anyone else? George Washington's Left Ear sounds like a very boring movie, although not as bad as what one would expect was its sequel, George Washington's Right Nostril. (George Washington's Chin would round out the George Washington facial features trilogy.)

Well, all bad jokes aside (and that go on way too long), there actually is a movie called George Washington Slept Here. It starred Jack Benny and appears on TCM from time to time. Not one of your more classic comedies, but it definitely has its moments.

"George Washington Slept Here" is a great comedy. Too bad if you don't agree--your loss, not mine.

Evidently not only is you're hearing impaired but so too your vision Gramps, they pull the film case/flotsome outta the drink and it clearly states 'George Washington Slept Here'.
That Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan movie ('42) you're jumping on (though not a fav. of mine) was very popular during the war years...
and another Warner Bro production, as was 'Destination Tokyo' ('43) - if you didn't miss it?
Btw, 'Destination Tokyo' is one of the movies that prompted Bernard Schwartz to enlist in the navy, and after attaining stardom, got his choice of movie genres an picked a war comedy starring Cary Grant (Operation Petticoat) directly by relative novice Blake Edwards.

Of course we all realized the real title when they picked up the case from the water. "Oh, 'George Washington Slept Here.' That makes more sense. I thought they said 'George Washington's Left Ear.'"

I'm not jumping on the movie -- I've never seen it. The only Jack Benny film I've ever seen is "To Be or Not to Be." Always thought he was funny, though.

Thanks for the tip on "Destination Tokyo" -- I'm always up for a good submarine movie (or even a mediocre one).

And ... "Gramps"? Listen up, sonny, when I was your age we knew how to treat our elders with respect.

reply

Don't know if you caught it, but 'Destination Tokyo' was the movie the submariners of Thunderfish traded for, and the crew was watching that night - in essence watching a WB movie w/in a WB movie.

Yeah, it's sort of a "six degrees of separation" thing. Also, just to keep it going a bit farther, Cary Grant starred in "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House," which was a later (and, I feel, much better) version of "George Washington Slept Here".

I've only seen the film once (just then!) and I got impression Duke was calling it 'George Washington's Left Ear' as joke title for the film.

That's actually what I heard him saying and thought it odd title for a film! It's only when they retrieved the film trunk/case did I realised the real title of the film.

I too though it was cool see them watch a Hollywood submarine movie within a Hollywood submarine movie, and actually picking on it as kinda being Hollywood 'make believe' only to redeem it when they too find themselves in the middle of the Imperial Fleet.
