ACE IN THE HOLE (1951) would make a great double feature with... another Kirk Douglas film called TOWN WITHOUT PITY (1961).

Like AITH, the film TWP deals with a sensational situation (a rape by 4 GIs) and the way the public reacts to it.

Both movies also cast a light on the medias involvement in fanning the flames of exploitation.

Lastly, I have always felt that AITH was based on the Kentucky true life cave death of Floyd Collins. At the time, his own father sold souvenirs to the tourist flocking the see his son trapped in a cave.

The year 1951 also saw the release of a film called The Well which was nominated for the same Oscar as Ace in the Hole. It concerns a child stuck down the eponymous well.

Yes, A Face in the Crowd. Both films are quite good at understanding the new power of mass media.
