Amazing commentary

I just listened to Donald Ritchie's commentary on the Criterion DVD. It is one of the best I have ever heard. Anyone agree?

I finished the commentary. It was amazing. Not just for the stylistic analysis, but also for the anecdotal bits. Seems Setsuko Hara is the japanese Garbo.

Pretty good, but I wouldn't say amazing. He sounds like a guy who only reads books and watches movies, but never talks to anyone. Doesn't know how to pronounce words like "autonomous" and "apotheosis". He claims that the brother plays Chess, but in fact he's playing Go. Also never comments on why the brother has disappeared. Presumably lost in World War II, but he should not assume the viewer knows that. Finding out stuff like that that bridges the gap between the context that was known when the movie was made and people watching in later eras is one of the reasons to have a commentary in the first place.
