Just saw this last night!!!

I just saw this movie for the first time last night. In 1950 I was twelve years old so I don't remember if I ever saw this even though in those day I was always in the movie house right around the block from where I lived in NYC on 51st and 8th Ave. Movie house was the Tivoli. Anyway, didn't they shield rape victims back then? I don't believe they publish rape victims' names unless they are murdered. Unfortunately I missed the beginning of the movie but caught the girl running from the rapist in a lonely place where trucks are parked. Anyway, the whole problem was that this poor girl needed to have some therapy instead of her going right to work and have people staring at her as if it was her fault. And in the end Jerry Paris was really pushing himself on this girl so no wonder she conked him on the head. Good Grief, even if she wasn't raped she was right to conk him. He was obnoxious and it looked to me like he was trying to rape her!!!!!

I agree. Ann was only defending herself. And he wasn't sending out the right signals with his aggression.

Actually, journalists often published rape victims names. It wasn't until the 1960s when rape victims began campaigning for privacy rights that it changed. It's STILL being debated in many court cases today, if you can believe it.

This sounds odd to say, but the "rape" scene (the pursuit scene) were the best shots of the film, even though we're screaming at Anne to run faster and hit the guy with something. Director Lupino was sticking to the warped gender conventions of the time that women were docile, weak, etc. It fits in context, but is dated to us, of course.

I totally agree, he was a jackass! Hopefully Ann will recover. If that had been me, I would have hidden inside the truck. But we all know what the plot involved. Was T. Andrews(Bruce) part Native American? He sure looked like it.
