Anyone think Hunt killed (Spoilers!)...

So when Johnny runs into an old pal of his at the bar he asks her how her husband is doing and she says he was shot in Abilene, and no one knows by whom. Later Hunt Bromley is being joshed at the barbershop by the locals who say he's never killed anyone, and he replies that they don't know everything about him, like what he used to do in Abilene. Maybe he shot Gregory Peck's old friend's husband. Anyone else subscribe to this theory?

yeah, it's a pretty tight little feature with no loose ends, so that would sew up the loop thread very well (of him replacing peck). good thinking. i heard both, and didn't consciously think of that... though i did wonder what the kid was gettin at.

I just watched this the other night. After reading your post I took that into consideration. It's entirely possible that Bromley was in Abilene at the time. That would make a lot of sense. Especially since his true nature is revealed when he shoots Ringo in the back.
Another loop I thought of also........Ringo puts the father in jail to keep him out of the picture until he leaves town. Why didn't the Marshal lock up Bromley until Ringo left town? Of course if he had it would have changed the ending.

My problem would be the marshall not arresting Hunt after killing Ringo. I know Ringos last wishes were to allow Hunt to go on into the miserable life of top gun in the west but after ringo died the marshall should have beat the crud out of him and threw him in jail.

There's no point if there is absolutely no possibility of a conviction. What would it matter to keep Bromly in jail for a few weeks until a trial?

Since Ringo had stated categorically in front of multiple witnesses that he had not been murdered and he (Ringo) was the one who drew first, there is no way that Bromly could be convicted of murdering Ringo.

So what would throwing him in jail until a trial accomplish? Having him still be around during the funeral and such would just upset Ringo's friends more.

The marshal THREATENED to lock up Bromley unless he left town within a half-hour or an hour, I forget which. However, the marshal, as you know, was lacking in foresight and should have incarcerated Bromley on the spot instead of just threatening him.

Yes, I suspect he killed the saloon singer's husband AND the son of the couple in the upstairs room of the boarding house. The couple also said their son had been killed in Abilene.

I got that impression, too. If not, why would they bother to mention Abilene so many times?

reply

i guess it is possible.

Ehh ... Hunt was a kid, a "squirt," desperate to prove himself. I don't think he ever killed anyone before Ringo, which is why he wanted to commit the act so badly.
