Why.... (SPOILER)

...does her marriage to the parson seem to go unconsummated? (Maybe it just seems so in the re-edited version I saw, which also goes by the title The Wild Heart.)

They don't seem to be very clear about this.

I absolutely HATED the ending. It's one time I wished they had pasted a "traditional Hollywood ending" on something : (
