so what exactly is the game that they play? what does it mean to get lost?

Part of the game involves trying to hurt each other's feelings, where the winner is the one that leaves the contest with the last word, a sense of superiority and ideally having caused a display of angry frustration from the other.

Not just annoy each other. This can be extended to others as when they got the child slapped.

It's a mystery. Elizabeth is Dr Mabuse-esque, in one scene she even tries to hypnotize Paul.

These “terrible children” do not care about wealth, fame, or power; they care about supremacy in the other’s eyes.

Sex games. But the director had to tiptoe around it because censorship.
