betty Hutton annoying as hell

Maybe it's because I know the real Annie Oakley story of her dignity and ladylike behavior, but Betty Hutton is annoying as hell in this movie. She acts like she was shot up with amphetamines. Loud braying voice and singing. I wish they could have helped Judy Garland and not fired her. It's no wonder Betty didn't win any awards she was an embarrassment.

I agree. I was in a high school production of AGYG, and our lead played Annie with more class. Our Indians were plated with a lot more respect, as well. If I didn't want to hear the great songs again, I'd've changed the channel an hour ago.

LOL! Bully for you. The script was based on the 1946 broadway stage musical. That's 70 years ago, so it's very unlikely to be politically correct by contemporary standards.🐭

Agreed this production was a Hollywood mess.

The thing that annoys me the most is that they made this stupid story about how she has to pretend to lose in order to get him to marry her, which is not true.

How unfortunate that today's young people lose out when watching old movies by not being able to transport themselves into the mood and sensibilities of that movie's era.

i like films about real'people to have some tenuous connection to the actual lives of said persons. frank butler married Annie oakley in the knowledge that she was better than him, and he had no problem with that. he gave up his own shooting career to be her manager. he was not a conceited idiot as he appears to be in this film. nor was Annie oakley a rough tomboy as she is shown as being in this film, in fact she was a very attractive girl.

That's exactly how I am with most 1930s and 1940s films, I got a talent of mentaly and emotionally transporting myself back to those time periods while watching and I love it. I almost feel like I've been there and it was great. Funny thing though, not this film as much cause I don't love Betty Hutton as much as some of them such as Judy Garland, Esther Williams, Eleanor Powell, Ruby Keeler, Ginger Rogers, Mae West, The Marx bros, Gene Kelly. Fred Astaire, William Powell, Lana Turner, Myrna Loy, and lots more. Anyway, I saw your comment about being able to transport yourself back to the era and I immediately could relate to that. I have a list of a good number of 30s and 40s films with the above people I listed that makes me feel that way. I can't explain it but even with the depression and WW2, there's still something special about that time period. Hollywood's golden age films and celebs are part of it but there's even more to it than that I can't explain. Just the whole era itself.

Yepp, mugging and acting like a female Jerry Lewis. I'll listen to Merman over and over, but I'll never finish this film.

I just caught a scene on TV where Annie spends a couple of minutes monologuing to an imaginary lover (while everyone else goes about their business in the background, paying her no mind), then some guy jumps on to the ship and Annie runs up and kisses him then blames him for her doing so.

Perhaps there is context to this scene, but it seemed to me as if the character was just a complete lunatic, and everyone else on the ship knew it and knew to stay back.

They probably only let her stay on the ship because she gave them all handies before bed.

Betty Hutton plays the part like she is on stage and has to exaggerate her movements and expressions to be seen on the back row. That doesn't work well for film.

Judy Garland didn't fit the role. I can understand why the producers decided to make the change move on.

Betty Hutton rocks (although I’ll admit she’s an acquired taste). Check out her Capitol singles for her great voice. (Bjork covered her.) Also my favorite movies of hers are The Stork Club and Miracle of Morgan’s Creek.
