Bette Davis was Robbed of an Oscar
How in God's name did she lose?
Margo Channing is an iconic character

agreed.
studio politics are why i gave up watching the oscars years ago.
Actually, I think it was explained before the movie: Both Bette Davis and Anne Baxter were nominated for "Best Actress". According to TCM, the studio asked Anne Baxter to take the "Best Supporting Actress" nomination instead, but she declined just having won the "BSA" for "The Razor's Edge". So the votes between her and Bette Davis were split allowing Judy Holliday to take it that year. Again, this according to TCM.
sharegood point, but it was still the studio's decision (i.e., politics) that gooned everything. they couldn't afford to put all their eggs (egos?) in one basket? davis was in a career decline, and baxter was on the rise.
either way, i believe it backfired... and i'm a bigger fan of holliday (the actress AND the western gunslinger) than the other two.
I don't care what anyone else thinks, if there was an Oscar winning performance that year, Bette Davis was IT.
Besides, did Anne Baxter or Judy Holiday ever have a hit song written about THEIR eyes?
I don't think I've ever agreed with a post more. I've seen many of Bette Davis' movies and I've never been as captivated by her character as I was with with her portrayal of Margo. She played it PERFECTLY or as we say these days she "killed it".
