Bensonhurst 0 7740 7741 goof

For years I was curious about this goof in the telephone episode. When Ralph tries to catch Alice on the phone Ralph repeats their telephone #. It's clearly dubbed, and then when Alice corrects him with the correct phone #, it's dubbed for her as well. I can only guess that because the shows were live, the dubbing needed to be done so the scene made sense…… has anybody ever noticed that goof before ???? Thanks, cheers !!!!!

That's actually not a goof. The original number was BEnsonhurst 3-7741, but after they filmed the show they realized that was an actual phone number so the cast had to go back and re-dub with the 0-7741. Otherwise the 3-7741 number would have probably received a lot of unwanted phone calls.

Thanks for the info, good to know.

Looked like they said ZERO at the end too...it always bothered me.

No, the zero at the end is part of the story. Ralph thinks Alice is going to leave the apartment to see Harvey Wallstetter, so he hurriedly takes a look at his own phone and misreads it. He runs out to a pay phone and calls "Bensonurst 0-7740" a hundred times, but nobody answers. When he comes back to the apartment and confronts Alice, she informs he was calling the wrong number.

I think that's the particular moment when you can clearly notice the overdubbing.

reply

Yes and it was my phone number at the time. It was very frustrating getting all the Honeymooner fans calling me up all the time

'The Babysitter'
Yes I also noticed the same, perhaps Alice forgot or just didn't get the numbers correct so there's that slight dubbing(?) Several other episodes were like that.
