Anyone know the movie about the film buff who was obsessed with Cagney?

It was on pay cable in the early '80s, and the main character (who might have been gay?) would sit in the dark watching movies on his projector (not video). He got obsessed with replicating Cagney's gangster characters, to the point of becoming a violent criminal himself.

Ring any bells?

That's it! I forgot about some of the other characters he channeled; but looking on Wikipedia, he does indeed end the film as Cagney's "top of the world, Ma!" character from White Heat.

Just watched W.H. on TCM last night and came to the boards. The movie the op describes is from 1980 called FADE TO BLACK. Hope this helps!
