The movie really isn't about Addie so seeing her is not important. In fact, I think if an actress had been cast in that role, people might form an impression of her based on that actress. By not ever showing her, we are forced to know her from the other characters' point of view.

How they see her; what they think, feel, and say about her; those are the things that really matter. We also have Addie's narration. That gives us a bit more of a view of her but it's a basic view. She is not an omniscient narrator. What we actually see; what goes on in the other characters' experiences, lives, and memories, though affected by Addie, are not known to her as she was not there to experience them.

Addie is never seen but her presence is felt throughout the movie. This would be similar to a movie that shows the effects of any event or thing on the characters' lives. The actual event of thing would not need to be seen by us, the viewer, for the impact to be felt. For example, if a crime or someone's death affects a group of people (family, co-workers, police, suspects, etc.) it's not necessary to show that person or event. A director or screenwriter may opt to put that person or event in the movie or not but ultimately it wouldn't be necessary. You may not realize it but it's not uncommon in film; something off camera we don't see propels the story we do see.

Even though it's Celeste Holm's voice, I imagine the gorgeous Gene Tierney as Addie. Who else could tempt Porter away from Linda Darnell?
