Doom in the Dark

Yes, this somewhat lesser B noir uses the same subject as the, perhaps, stronger "Somewhere in the Night", but this one has the superb cinematographer John Alton who gives the deepest blacks available in film noir. His work here is among his best. Also, this was directed by the great Robert Florey, who in tandem with Alton makes for a rich visual plain. The concluding gunfight in the warehouse also highlights Percy Helton's work as the pathetic, wheezing Petey, a noir stooge we've never seen better used than here. All in all, there's nothing pale about this dark ride.

Absolute perfection in the face of woofing!

Yes, I was happy to see Helton was in this. At first I thought his character was done in the first act, but when Eddie started searching for Petey, I knew we were in for more.

I like how they set up Petey's devotion to Samson, his cat. It made me feel tense when he went after him, and sad when he got shot. Even so, he had one more thing to do...

My favorite Helton role was the Medical Examiner in "Kiss Me Deadly." Think I'll go grab that clip.
