Death Scene of Jack Bearnes

The scene where Jack Bearnes was killed by the tilling machine in the cabbage field was very riviting.

Not for the squeamish. I should have expected something like this after "T Men", but...whew! Who knew the tap dancer had it in him?

Is it just me or did it seem like his friends were not doing much to help him as he was about to sliced and diced by that harrow???

A very gruesome scene, to be sure.

I wondered that too, it seemed like Rodriguez and Garcia took their time getting out there in the field. I thought they'd sneak up on Hunnicut, take his gun, and shoot McGraw.

I thought it was pretty realistic which made it more suspenseful. After all, MGM wasn't going to kill off the star (no spoiler here, look at the thread title), were they? There was a lot of open ground to cover so if R & G were spotted, the bad guys could have easily picked them off. Remember earlier in the evening Garcia was spotted in the open field by McGraw and instead of trying to run for cover or out of the headlights (McGraw didn't know who he was in the distance), Garcia realized there was no chance of getting away. Also Rodriguez didn't know Bearnes, so although willing to help out, probably wasn't going to stick his neck out that far.

He did know Bearnes though, they had worked together in the past. And I don't know how realistic it is, but maybe with the sound of the engine Hunnicutt doesn't hear the sound of the two of them running toward him. Just a thought.

Yeah, the sound of the engine might have helped. But I know if it were me, my legs would be getting a little wobblier the closer I got to AH and the farther I got from the cover at the edge of the field.

I actually meant that the other fellow, not Ricardo Montalban, didn't know Bearnes.

I thought it was a great scene in that you could feel RM's feeling of helplessness as he watches what must have been a pretty gruesome end for his friend.

Great movie!

The only thing I thought was it should have been pretty dark in the field. Perhaps climbing up onto the tractor grabbing that guy's gun and drilling the bad guys was too much.

I want to say that leading up to the field scene was creepy, too.

Also saw this earlier tonight (or this morning). It was very suspenseful and quite shocking.

Ironically, I clicked on this thread while watching the movie -- just as this scene played.

It was a harrowing experience.

Well done scene, especially when the camera angle looks up at the blades. No scream from Bearnes though, I thought that was a bit odd.

Brutal death scene. I thought they were gonna save him but I guess not....
