An exceptionally irksome film

I just saw AR last night for thew first time in my life. I have always liked Spencer Tracy very much. I enjoy some of Hepburn's films and Judy Holliday is a under appreciated national treasure.

That said, I found Adam's Rib to be an exceptionally irksome and annoying film. I have no concept of how it could ever be considered one of the 'best' comedies of all time for, for me, the laughs were few and far between.

The David Wayne character just is not funny. The song he sings is very annoying as is his 'personality'.

Tracy can be very overbearing in some of his films and when he begins to preach, he can be toxic. Listening to him spout off on his concepts of righteousness was a bit too much.

Judy Holliday saved this film for me. Without her in the film (and some great character actors and actresses)I would have turned it off quite quickly. Her scene in the jailhouse with KH was marvelous and she had some good dialog. As Hepburn asks her what happened after she shot the gun and Holliday answers, "bang?" with a quizzical expression on her face, you have to laugh. And she deserved a close-up reaction shot in the courtroom scene in which Hope Emerson lifts Spencer Tracy into the air. She gets a long shot, but it was her I wanted to see react.

Tom Ewell and David Wayne in the same film? One is a virtual clone of the other.

Jean Hagen was fine in a Judy Holliday type role.

The film was just a bit too stuffy for me; preachy, too. All pointing the way to the worst ST & KH film of all time - "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?"

I'd try Adam's Rib one more time, but its not a dish I think I would order or savor anytime soon.

I guess it is a matter of personal taste. I disagree with most of what you are saying but again, to each his own. I think I saw this for the first time when I was about 19. Now that I am 43, I still love it. Hepburn and Tracy have insane timing and bounce off of each other in perfect sync.

Apparently it isn't for everyone.

Being a big fan of Spenser Tracy, liking Hepburn, and enjoying all of the other Tracy/Hepburn movies, I can honestly say I REALLY disliked this movie. Very disappointing.

I thought this was Hepburn's most obnoxious and insufferable character. Nothing but an over the top caricature of the self-righteous feminist. As long as you placated her, everything was fine. Dare to disagree with her and she became a mean-spirited, sneering shrew.

She used the case to advance herself, and more importantly, to spite him. She seemed to have so little respect for him that she thought she could publicly and professionally humiliate and belittle her own husband, but once they got home everything would be forgotten and forgiven...after all, she was right and he was wrong. And when it wasn't...well, that was all HIS fault. I just found her to be the epitome of selfishness. I can judge you, but don't you DARE judge me!

Even at the end, when he has an opportunity to advance himself, she can't be happy for him or supportive. All she can think of is how to oppose him and advance herself again. Just an unlikeable person.

We're going through AFI's Top 100 Comedies, and this was tonight's pick. I just didn't think it was very funny at all, and was actually quite boring. We watched Aresnic & Old Lace last night and that was just hilarious, a tight script, and a great energy to it, by comparison this movie was just kind of meh.

Tastes change. Holiday is still brilliant. Some of the Tracy / Hepburn back and forth in all their films sometimess seems labored.

reply

Brilliant idea, to watch all movies from a list like that! I might do the same.

Anyway, I agree with you. "Adam's rib" was watchable, a few haha', not more.

"Arsenic..." on the other hand, is brilliant. Total screwball Cary Grant and awesome script!

This movie is a masterpiece. Totally, and in its entirety. You're argument is invalid.

OK - I reverse my position.

Just saw this film and came on the board to see I was the only one who didn't quite appreciate it.

But, now I know better, thanks! :p

It's a very controversial and mature comedy. If you don't Spencer Tracy, I wish you'd go more into detail than to call him overbearing and his speeches "toxic." What was so overbearing? What was so toxic about his speeches? The way he brought his point home is WONDERFUL. There have been many women acting like complete idiots, like Kathryn's character and someone like Tracy needed to come in and teach them a lesson. In this case, that NO ONE - man or woman - has the right to hold another person hostage or try to kill them.

Sorry. My post is almost 7 years old and I have forgotten the details of my dislikes.

I think you are reading too much into it, honestly.

reply

Damn. I didn't think to look at the date of your OP.

I watched it last night. Thought it was kind of mediocre. Not bad, but just not that good. I found most of the characters annoying. But it did have some laughs too, or at least I thought so. And like you, I quite liked Judy Holliday's character.

I didn't enjoy the film as much as I expected to. The best moments were in the court room. Outside of that I found it rather dull. I think both Jean Hagen and Judy Holliday could have been used more as they and their characters were the best. Also, this is slightly irrelevant but bothered me nonetheless, both Tracy and Hepburn looked so old and yet they were in their 40's. Tracy looked more like his late 50's. I found some of their antics, as a 'mature' couple, childish.

Good post. Tracy was a very heavy drinker, so he may have looked ratty b/c of that. Do not know about KH except that sje was a smoker, so there.

I didn't know that about Tracy. In fact I think he looked older than late 50's. Perhaps people seemed to age more quickly then. Perhaps.

He looks even worse in some of his last films - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, along with It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. He looks like a stuffed scarecrow.

I just saw Adam's rib tonight and have to agree with the OP. I think for me it's the courtroom scenes that ruined it for me, in particular the verdict.

Hepburn and Tracy and the other actors were exceptional, and a lot of the dialogue (excluding the stupid comedy routine by the neighbor) was very good. I have to say this is one I'll never want to see again.

reply

I will see it again just for Judy Holiday and the big lady wrestler.

I loved this film! The best of Tracy and Hepburn! I was amazed at the topic of women's rights and of equality of the sexes even whispered about in 1949, but the topic of a film??? Advanced thinking on the part of the director and producer. Hepburn was a strong character, and she played the role with gusto. Tracy was terrific as her husband, strong but accommodating in the courtroom, but not really able to match the wits and gusto of his wife. At home there relationship was a bit different, and I especially liked the last scene. I had a good laugh.

I wonder how many women were attorneys in 1949? Not many I imagine. Another brilliant topic by the director/producer.

Well, OK then!
