This is not one of Hitchcock's best

I really don't like things that are overrated. What's so special about this film? Not one of the characters is likeable. Not one. Also I failed to detect the mystery in this movie. Where's the mystery? Everything was obvious and the dialogue that led to the unveiling was not compelling at all.

I find it pretentious to say that this movie is Hitchcock's best. Just watch Vertigo and you'll see the difference.

Well the murderers are not for the most part, but the house guests are. Also I don't think it was trying to be a mystery, for the suspense comes from the fact that they are so close to David's body, whose name is brought up throughout the night and you are wondering if anyone is going to discover the body before the night is over.

But yeah, Vertigo is Hitchcock's best.

I personally don't see how anything you said makes this film overrated, but each to their own. The characters weren't supposed to be likeable at all. There wasn't supposed to be mystery, it was meant to be obvious.

This is my favourite film of all time. The dialogue is incredible. The acting is superb. The amount of suspense (for me) that was packed into such a simple idea was laudable. Every single aspect of this film is perfect to me. The final shot is honestly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on screen.

I'll take this film over Rear Window any day.

I liked Rear Window the first time I saw it, but I haven't been able to finish it since then, despite multiple tries. Meanwhile, I can watch Rope over and over again.

You can't say that scene where it's showing the chest and the maid is clearing all of the stuff off of it and bringing books to be put into the chest didn't get your heart racing.

That was a great scene... but I agree, if I was going to introduce a contemporary to Hitchcock I'd recommend they watch either Vertigo or Rear Window to start out.

Those characters weren't supposed to be likeable, except maybe David's father. The killers were obviously nasty people. Rupert had filled their heads with a lot of nonsense when they were younger (theories about superior human beings, etc.). The other guests were a bunch of airheads (David's father being an exception). The housekeeper should have opened her eyes a bit to see what those fellows were really up to.

This movie isn't a whodunit. The audience knows who committed the crime and how it was done. I think that the suspense comes from wondering how soon before those killers are caught. Also, the idea of a party going on when there is a dead body in the house, and the guests are wondering what happened to this person....it's horror, for sure.

I've only seen The 39 Steps, The Birds, Psycho, The Trouble With Harry, Vertigo, and Rear Window, but I thought Rope was better than two of those and pretty damn close to on par with the others.
