bad shots

Not to give any plot points away but, people keep shooting people who continue as if nothing happened. Or at least, not right away.

That's how being shot was depicted in early movies, far less graphic than today. Examples are simply collapsing, grabbing one's chest, or wherever you were shot, with very little blood and no shattered bones or spilled brain tissue.

The first person I ever saw bleed when he was shot was Frog 2 in the French Connection. It was shocking. Before that, they had to rip the guy's shirt off to see if he was shot. In Raw Deal, Marsha Hunt anticipates Grace Kelly in High Noon by three years, but there is one important difference: ten minutes later the shootee is .... I don't want to be a spoiler. Think of Geppetto saying "Lie down, Pinocchio. You're dead." At the end of the movie, several characters get pumped full of lead at close range but somehow manage to keep the dialog and action going for a while. That's what I meant by bad shots.

You won't spoil it for me, I've seen it almost 10 times. Now, for everybody who hasn't, here come the spoilers:

If Ann had shot Fantail dead, there would have been nobody to kidnap her. If she had incapacitated him, they would have had two options: Either leave him there to die, which Ann would not allow, or take care of him, which would have been really grotesque. Yeah, you tried to kill me, no I'll call ambulance for you.
If Rick and Joe had shot each other dead mutually, the movie would have been over. Nobody to save Ann, except possibly Pat with or without the police, which would have been pretty dull. No pyromaniac dying because of a house fire. And admit it, Raymond Burr screamed pretty well. Twice.

Since you must be the expert on this movie, let me ask you this: When Ann is rescued at the end, she looks fine. How come, given all the threats?

reply

Maybe Rick only scorched her toes? He definitely tortured her to find out what she knows, but we don't know what he did exactly…it's only implied that it had something to do with fire.

In the climax, it appears that the main stooge, who had already been shot, shoots his own guy in the back while trying to get Joe. Even with the fog, pretty back shooting.

if man is 5
then the devil is 6
if the devil is 6
then God is 7
and if God is 7...

He had a long cut on his face, as if maybe she just grazed him. If so, he was stunned for a moment and went down, then got up again.

As far as reactions to being shot are concerned, old movies and tv shows are probably more realistic. In cases where a bullet doesn't hit the brain or the heart, the victim often remains alive and conscious, and even able to walk around for a while or shoot back. In today's movies, gunshot victims are almost always instantaneously dead, before they even hit the ground. It looks dramatic, but that's not always the way it really happens.
