Why? WHY? Why? That stupid Irish accent?

Why on earth? It adds nothing to the movie whatsoever.

reply

Not only does it add nothing, it detracts quite a bit. This is a very entertaining thriller, but Orson Welles' "accent" was a distraction, to say the least.

reply

IMO, it was just another of Welles' many self-indulgences. Bad accents, prosthetic makeup, and pointlessly showy camera work were all common in Welles' work. In a classic case of "the emperor's new clothes", many people mistake Welles' hamminess for genius.

reply

That's very true. I also saw Orson Welles' ham it up recently in "The Long Hot Summer," where he wore mounds of makeup and had an voice like Otis the drunk from "The Andy Griffith Show." Many of his performances remind me of latter-day Marlon Brando, though in their prime, but were major talents, in my opinion.

reply

I'm not sure what make-up you're referring to but they did a great job in Citizen Kane.

It was fine.

reply

Genius or not, the accent was terrible, annoying, distracting and worst of all inconsistent. Sometimes heavy, sometimes not.

reply

yah, maybe they should have made him an American sailor.

reply

Really, i mean there was no reason for him to be Irish, except Welles' hubris.

reply

You probably think he should have sounded like the "Lucky Charms" leprechaun, right?

I agree the accent was, well, pointless. I kept thinking 'why is the character Irish?' I quite like Welles voice so I guess I was a little disappointed that he didn't use his natural voice. One thing I noticed as well - during the film scenes he was rather light on the accent while during the voiceover - it struck me as really thick. Just seemed a little inconsistent to me.

Also by the way - I love the flashy camera work in his films. I love, in particular, the close up face shots. I find them jarring in a positive way given the atmosphere and overall feel of the film. But just in general, Welles camera angles and other films techniques I find to be really excellent (particularly in Citizen Kane and Touch Of Evil).

I enjoyed this film - it was absurd, funny, dramatic and very memorable.

reply

I agree - the accent was dreadful & distracting.
I just finished watching "Night Must Fall" and Robert Montgomery's Irish accent was perfection! I forgot he was an American after just a few minutes. And what a performance!! If you've never seen it, it's worth a look.

reply

it's the dubbing of the accent which is the worst thing, it doesn't even match his mouth in some scenes

reply

It was horrible and I wondered too what the point of it was. I had to watch the whole darn thing w/ subtitles on. I love accents in real life & on screen, especially if it adds something to the film. But this was very hard to take!

It was so bad I had to keep pausing the movie every 10 minutes or so and coming back to it later on. I think it took me about 7 hours to watch the whole film. What's funny is that every now and than Welles speaks in his normal voice before breaking out in the low-rent brogue. The dubbing was awful too but the accent nearly ruins the film.

The accent is totally fine, convincing even. You guys look like a bunch of whiners.

reply

Convincing? So Irish people randomly slip into American accents, sometimes Irish accents, and sometimes a weird combination of the two?

reply

I was curious to hear how many people were bothered by it - it wasn't accurate but frankly, how many of us sit down and analyze each other's accent? Unwanted attention to a detail that has ruined many of these guys' experience. I enjoyed the movie nonetheless. Good to hear your positive viewpoint amidst a lot of cries.

reply

I quite agree with you. The accent was terrible and it bothered me all throughout the film. It made me sick. And all his (Welles) attempts to make the film so "art-house" and his so-called intellectual talking!!

Im Irish and that accent is absolutely ridiculous, what we call stage irish,no-one in Ireland talks like that.I was laughing so much every time he spoke.
It is the way any american would try to do an irish accent.I remeber a scene in Friends where monica tries to do one and Welles attempt isnt far off that.
You would think a so called great actor like welles could do better,my opinion of him has really gone down, seeing as he actually did spend time acting in the abbey theatre in dublin when he was younger

reply

Thanks for your reply. At least you know how he is supposed to sound. The accent ruined it for me.

reply

Dude I'm swedish and even I can tell that accent was ridiculous. I know what irish sounds like and I would never had guessed it was irish if someone didn't point it out.

reply

I thought maybe this is were Adam Sandler got his silly voice!
