That thief really knew how to put on a good show

Pretending to faint and have an entire crowd present to witness him being harrassed by the man he robbed. Quite a con artist and showman.

He must be con for a long time hence was aware of how to get out of a situation when he is caught.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

It goes back to the beginning of the movie when Ricci got the job and everyone else who wasn't qualified couldn't get it because it wasn't their trade.

That kid was a professional thief, Ricci isn't. That's why he got away with it and Ricci got caught.

That scene is maddening. I appreciate the unhappy ending and all, but it sucks that the punk got off easy.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

The point is that the thief acted out of his own desperate situation and poverty, and that this reality is what makes men steal. That's why it's important to translate the title as "THIEVES", and not, as the American title, "THIEF". It's a basic idea of the neo-realism.
