Some of this dialoge is straight out of 'The Letter.'

Some of it is word for word. I heard other phrases, too, which were the very same as other movies from that era. Whoever wrote this must have spent many, many hours in the theaters with a pen and flashlight.

I did like it, though, and I enjoyed watching it, once. I liked the cast very much.

I watched this last night and am anxious now to see THE LETTER and compare the two.

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies

This is more of a remake of The Letter than plagiarism. It's an interesting set of twists on the plot--Ann Sheridan's charactet seems a much more innocent character than the Bette Davis character in The Letter, and the dead man seems to have been a stalker.

It is a remake, another adaptation of the Maugham play.

The 1940 Bette Davis version is also a remake.

Here's the first (I think!) film version:

Wow! And starring Jeanne Eagels in her only surviving "talkie." Thanks!

You're welcome!

It's clear the story is based on The Letter but the film credits don't mention Maugham, his story or the previous film versions. The writing credit is Original Screenplay by ... I wonder how and why they'd do that.
