Although I've watched the film many times, this line, as spoken by Robert Young's Larry Ballentine, finally "clicked" for me...he was admitting he was every bit the gold digger that Hayward's Verna Carlson said she was.

well spotted I remember being so pleased with myself for getting the allegory

"The Postman Always Rings Twice" But the "...orchids." went straight past me.. thanks 4 years later..
