People today are pledging themselves to Marx, Guevara, and Stalin. They've had the Communist legacy of blood and chains of the 20th century to observe and still they persist.

The thing about Communism is that the idea is noble (fairness to all!) and the rhetoric is intoxicating, so people fall for it, especially strident students with little experience and a lot of passion.

Was he a communist? I don’t know much about him.

He claimed no and said he was a "peacemonger". It seems he was anti-anti-Communist, though, and regarded the witch hunts by the US government to be a repression of civil liberties.
