Did Cantana poison Pedro when he was arrested?

When the Indian confessed to killing Da Silva, she stated she tried to kill him to give him mercy prior to his execution. I assume they were going to burn him at the stake. The priest and other officials rushed to his cell to free him after the guilty party confessed. Luckily Pedro survived.
