One of my favorite movies..and I must admit I cry like I've been shot..

when I watch it. I guess its because of expectation. I know what's coming. I cry so freaking much. I don't know how Claude Jarman does it. His acting is breathtaking. He's so heart breaking. When his pa tells him to take the fawn out and shoot him, its like he's been gut shot. And then when he looks at his mother after having just shot the fawn its so real, his rage.

One of my favorites and I can't help it. I cry like a child. And I'm an adult male.

May have spoilers for you who haven't seen this film

It's one of my all time favourites too.
I cannot fault the acting, the script, almost taken word for word from the classic novel, and the cinematography.
I cry at other times...
When Jody is day dreaming at the river and then how his Pa defends him against Ma's potential wrath - Us men got to stick together in the name of peace.
When Pa says - Don't be afraid to love the boy. Then you see Ma later looking at the graves of her children.
When Jody says he's older than the eldest child who passed - I'm way passed dying, to console his Ma so hopefully she can be happy.
When Pa buys her the black alpaca and she thinks it's wasteful and feels she has to complain but the more she sees it and holds the new cloth she realises he loves her and wanted to treat her and she cries with confusion.
When Jody calls out - You're obliged to Pa! (This has become a staple in our household!)
When Jody goes looking for the fawn and thinks it's been eaten and then slowly finally he uncovers it. The look on his face - It's me Jody
When he carries it home across that beautiful skyline and then is standing in the doorway , he finally has his pet, 'something with dependence to it, something of ma own'.He shows his Pa and the fawn licks his face, that smile....
The fireside tale by Ma....
And Fodderwing, I love his friendship with Fodderwing , the boy who tried to fly.
Pa's eulogy - Lord it pleases us to think that you've straightened his legs....
Ma helping Jody build the fence because she could see how hard he was working to keep his beloved pet, even though she always knew it was impractical.
And the end - hunger's a fearsome thing, Jody had to learn the hard way.
But he did, and he came home, and his mother who had been looking for him, couldn't help but be overcome because she had not lost another child.

Forgive my misquotations etc but hopefully folk'll know where I coming from..

Are you kidding? It was like watching the movie again. There's something about it. The sweetness, the beauty of Jodie's passion and his closeness to his pa. Its hard to watch the mother at times. Her coldness and seeming callousness is at times hard to watch. I always thought yesterday when it was on that she would be the bleak spot in his memory after he had grown up. He would always be closer to his pa than his own mom. And how sad that would be.

You may see my other posts about Ory(?)
I think I must the only one in the world who defends her. But I would like to think that if there was a sequel she would be changed by her experience with Jody and Flag. I think children can teach us lessons forever.
When you are an only child living in a protective environment with your parents for company you find you have an abundance of love for them , even if they are harsh at times because you believe they love you because they care for you feed and clothe you.
Yes , hopefully because he was a boy he would have been closer to his Pa, similar interests etc, but in time he would probably learn that exuberant women risked becoming hard and depressed when/if they experienced so much loss and then also had the constant worry of putting enough food on the table for their little ones.

The expression on Orry's face when she recovers her son is as if for the first time in her life she ever lost anything and got it back. She was the same after Penny recovered from the snakebite, sobbing so hysterically one of those present said, "You act like you're sorry." She went out for three days looking for Jody although she never expected to get him back as she had learned not to expect positive outcomes. She went looking for Jody even though he said he hated his parents, hoped they would die, and hoped he would never see them again. Powerful acting and life lessons.
