Alastair Sim

He is great in this! I think if it weren't for his portrayal of Scrooge, he'd be pretty much unknown in the US.

A fantastic actor. Great in An Inspector Calls as well, not to mention The Belles of St Trinian's, which is probably his finest hour.

Just saw the film.

Alastair Sim was perfect - as usual.

Fine actor.

And Stage Fright, that Hitchock movie not many people like.

He was also excellent in London Belongs to Me.

Just watching Green for Danger again .... Alastair Sim's expressions of delight late in the film when the two doctors start fighting are absolutely brilliant. He eventually pulls up a chair and sits with a big grin on his face awaiting the outcome.

A top-class actor. His expressions are a delight to watch.

I've never seen a below-par performance from Alistair Sim.

reply

So top-class that I was wondering why I was bothering to watch this film. Virtually as soon as Sim spoke, I realised. He made the tedious first half of the film appear justified.

reply

Mr Sim certainly gives an entertaining performance here, but he's rather too hammy for my taste. Like Rod Steiger, a little bit of him goes a long way.

reply

This thread has inspired me to dig out all his movies again, always a treat to watch his performances.

Just brilliant. If you don't count Chaplin and Laurel, possibly Britain's finest film comedy actor. I suppose a case might be made for Cary Grant and I did like Will Hay but Ronnie Barker and David Jason's best work is all on TV. Terry-Thomas was good but a bit of a on-trick pony. He could play the con-man like Sim but not the Inspector. Sim's charcters were fully rounded, if odd, human beings.

Oops, I forgot Peter Sellers and I shall now curl up in embarrassment.

I always check out the "hated it" reviews before spending time watching a movie I'm interested in. One of the reviewers said Alastair Sim was an odd character in this movie as well as in real life. He referred people to read about him in Wikipedia. I did. The guy seemed pretty normal to me, even bordering on exemplary. One wife, a child, never drank and was very modest in his achievements which were many. If that is odd, I want to be odd. I did read where he mentored a young actor and brought him into the family. If people want to read between the lines, then I can only say they are assuming a lot and it tells me more about them than it does about Alastair Sim.

He is such an underrated actor. I love him in this movie, "A Christmas Carol", "The Happiest Days of Your Life", "Laughter in Paradise", and "An Inspector Calls".

Jim Hutton: talented gorgeous hot hunk; adorable as ElleryQueen; SEXIEST ACTOR EVER

My favorite Sim is the assassin in the Green Man.

Very good performance in this.

Great actor. His face and his voice made him a unique, magnetic screen presence. Honestly I could have sat and watched Sim read the phone book and be engaged.
