David Lean's Two Disastrous Mistakes

The 38 year old John Mills playing young 20 year old Pip. The first shot of him riding into London was appalling - he looks middle aged.

The second (literally huge) mistake was Fagin's ridiculous nose in Oliver Twist. Its not even a 'caricature' of a Jewish nose it is a Der Sturmer cartoon of a Jewish nose.

Two magnificent films full of wonderful delights and both marred for all time.

Agreed that Mills too old for Pip, probably I'll find some 75 yo Juliet somewhere

Enough of this. It's ridiculous. If you do your research, the nose of Fagin was a purely aesthetic decision - and one based on much earlier illustrations of Fagin. So for starters, it could hardly be seen as Lean's mistake. But at any rate - there was never any anti-Semitic motivation to it. In fact, it was said that one of the reasons they added the large nose to the make-up was because without, Fagin resembled Jesus somewhat too much. Oh, irony. Frankly, I think anybody who sees Fagin and thinks gasps "ANTI-SEMITISM" is probably more anti-Semitic than anyone involved with the films making. Grow up.

But you're right about John Mills being too old to play Pip. He gave a solid performance, but was miscast.

Nevermind 'semitic nose' it is SO HUGE as a nose that it is very fake and distracting.

I was disappointed in the oldster playing Pip.
