Big sleep v Maltese Falcon

Which of these two films do you prefer or think is the best.
I think MF has better character portrayels(Bogarts best perfomance}.
Ultimatly though I think BS is more gripping and entertaining.

The Maltese Falcon gets my vote.
The Big Sleep left me confused at the end, even though the dialogs are terrific.

The Big Sleep. Both are great but I slightly prefer the novel of The Maltese Falcon to the film version. Falcon might be closer to perfect but I will never tire of The Big Sleep.

What you see is nothing. I got a Balinese dancing girl tattooed across my chest.

My vote too goes to The Big Sleep. I think there's just more to it; as a film, as a study of character's, as a story, etc. As convoluted as it is, it's still incredibly gripping (which is NOT an easy task), and all the twists and motives are far more interesting and easy to identify with. It also has a perfect blend of action and cognition for a detective film, where I think Falcon goes a little overboard with the cognitive aspect.

The Big Sleep, without any doubt. It is the "Rio Bravo" to the "High Noon" which is "Maltese Falcon"- much more entertaining and much more subtle in its tone, with a lot of riches under its surface. Hawks uses a convoluted plot to create something which lives and survives multiple viewings solely by scenes which do not have their value in serving the "story" but in creating an experience. When Bogart and Bacall look at each other you suddenly completely forget what is going on, instead you experience something like an instant intimacy, you're in him and in her. "The Big Sleep" has everything which would make it a noir-prototype, but because of its "hawksian" attitude to its characters it is unintentedly revisionary and much more modern than "The Maltese Falcon" (which is good either, but in my opinion no masterpiece).

Psssh, my noir vote goes to Double Indemnity.

Definitely The Big Sleep. For me it's a much more enjoyable film with Bogart playing a much more interesting character. The dialogue and pace are fantastic, not to mention the chemistry between Bogart & Bacall.
I've enjoyed The Maltese Falcon, but I just don't buy Sam falling for Brigid, which makes his turning her over at the end completely meaningless to me.

yep, great pace.

The Big Sleep all the way.

The Maltese Falcon was innovative, but the end really drags where they're all sitting in one room chatting seemingly forever.

Cheers...

I love both but give the edge to Maltese Falcon. The scene in the room does not drag. The growing tension is part of what makes the scene work. You can feel it.

I also have to give points for MF being more of a groundbreaker.

Yeah, I definitely like Big Sleep better. The movie just works better as a whole.

I prefer The Big Sleep with the most beautiful ever cast, headed by Martha Vickers, and the all-time cool thug, Canino. Whats up with the all-dog casting of The Maltese Falcon? Both films have strong plots and solid acting. The premake of TMF, starring one Ricardo Cortez, has a nice looking cast and is a good view.

The Big Sleep for me, but only just. But it was a tough decision. I’ve read both original novels, and they're fantastic. Hammett and Chandler were two of the all time great detective writers. I love The Maltese Falcon film adaptation, but what gives The Big Sleep the edge is Martha Vickers, she really catches the essence of her character. But both movies (and books) are among my top ten for me.
