English actor?

I like the old films like this and great cinematography. But I am wondering why they cast Roddy McDowell (an english actor with an accent) to play a cowboys son. That made it less believable to me. The first Flicka movie he was able to hide his accent for the most part but this one it was very thick. It is tragic to see what happened to the actress who played the mom.

Probably because he was an important child star at the time.

It WAS annoying! He was inthe first movie (My Friend Flika) and it was annoying them too. In that story it says the character "came back " form boarding school, maybe his boarding school was many years in England!

McDowall was good in the part, but the English accent was inexplicable and distracting. As much as I like Roddy, I think they should have found a young American actor for the part. There were plenty of them around.

It reminds me of "The Parent Trap", in which American parents raise two daughters in the U.S. with English accents. I like the movie, but it's very strange.
