Most Boring Movie Ever

In my personal opinion, this is the most boring movie I have seen in my life. I had to watch it for a school project and ended up watching the last half in fast-forward because it was so boring. Opinions?

AND SO IT MUST BE WITH YOUR LIFE.

I would have to disagree with you, but as you say, these are opinions and will vary according to personal taste. If this was for a history class, you should have read the book for a more accurate representation. History class or not, give the book a try. It is an easy read, and goes more in the form of a documentary.

Boring? Is it boring to tell the story of men who gave thier lives and liberty so that you could live the life of a prince? Is it Boring to speak of the American losses that symbolized the start of WWII in the Pacific and the resolve that was born of those early losses. Boring? Not sure that's the word I would use to describe an attack by a small, fast moving wooden boat versus the Japanese fleet of destroyers and battleships. Boring? Not sure that's how I would describe the emotions that were depicted at the loss of good buddies, the demise of a well knit military unit, the turning of elite Navy fighters into common foot soldiers, knowing that there would be no reinforcements and either death or captivity was awaiting them. Boring? Not sure I would ever call Donna Reed boring. Grace and charm. That's how I would describe her. Someday, I hope that you can experience the grace and charm of a beautiful, good woman. No this wasn't boring. This was a movie that depicts how America became a great nation, and shows you the kind of people who made this nation great. Was there high tech gadgetry? No. There was bravery depicted here. Watch it and learn. [email protected]

ALSCHMITTY...Very well put and for my brave grandfather who earned a purple heart for his "boring" endeavors in the Pacific arena of this war...I THANK YOU!

As I watch this movie -- on the eve of Memorial Day -- I feel sorry for you. You will enjoy all of the benefits of freedom the individuals depicted in this movie died for, but will probably never have any appreciation for their sacrifice. In that regard, YOU are the loser. I feel sorry for you and everone who feels the way you do.

Guys, please, just because he didn't like the movie doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate sacrifices made for freedom or anything. He just didn't like the movie. Relax.

You don't say why you thought it was boring-- no computer-created "magic" like we have now, I suspect.

I think this movie does one hell of a job conveying the dispair, hopelessness, etc. of what those people in the Phillipines must have felt. When Wayne & Montgomery happen upon the retreating column of soldiers, they are stunned. The US is losing and losing badly, and is in full retreat. Russell Simpson says he'll stay & fight rather than leave his home, and pulls up a jug & weapon, waiting for the inevitable. The look on the remaining crew members on the beach as the plane flies off, not knowing what will become of them. It was a very dark period in this country's history and you should learn all you can about it.

When JOhn Wayne & Donna Reed are talking on the phone the last time, he is abruptly cut-off. We never see or hear anything more about what happened to Reed. That scene is very powerful-- friends, crew members, family, and others were suddenly separated and they were left to ponder thier fates. In most movies, the director would likely have had one final scene w/ Reed to show her fate. But the genius of John Ford is we just don't know what happened. She's gone and that's it.

One hell of a movie about powerful events in our history. My advice is to watch it again and pay attention.

Garp 15-1, your comments and views are right on the money. You said it very well, and I am glad to see that you too had the same impression of this film that I did.

It's really a shame that you find this movie boring. Chances are you'll find a lot of classics of the 40's and 50's boring as well. It's a problem that I find with a lot of younger people who have been raised on the MTV era and computer enhanced special effects. It seems that what stimulates them is mostly from intensive visuals and not story and character. At least you didn't complain that it was in black & white.

I'm probably the opposite of you. I find most of the modern movies with their heavy reliance on special effects and cartoonish stories boring. I appreciate movies that have good stories and character development which THEY WERE EXPENDABLE had plenty of.

I can't add to what has already been said by other posters other than I think it was remarkable that this movie was made in 1945. Most war pictures of the day were made for the purpose of raising morale and often didn't have the kind of depth that this picture had. I first saw this back in the early 70's as a kid and liked it immediately. It is even better now that my awareness of character is greater and that I can see and appreciate it in our service people who had much of it when facing an inevitable defeat.

It is OK that you found the movie slow, boring and without meaning. You are a few generations from the pain of the Fall of the Philipines in 1942. You should not be overly burdened with these memories. You will have your own to morn. When this movie was released many of us had relatives and loved ones either buried on Bataan, Corrigador, Cavite, Leyte and elsewhere or dying in Jap POW camps. There were 70,000 US and Philipino troops left behind to fight, starve and die. No, we don't find this movie boring. For some of us it is the only connection we have with family members wer never saw again. At least John Ford made a dignified truthful film about those days. God Bless him!

Ya and the OP never came back, no surprise in that.

I grew up with a guy that was a survivor of the Bataan death march, he never said anything about it to me until I'd finished my 3rd tour on the rivers of Vietnam. At that time only my father (another WW2 vet) had any idea what I'd been through. Their war was a lot different but we have our own losses to mourn too.

With age you will appreciate this fine movie about men and valor and war.
I know as a youth all I wanted to see was the combat and ignore the rest of the story. Now at 50 I appreciate John Ford Masterpiece and films even better.
In the days of eye candy and big blow up explosion action films. Films like this are rarely made anymore.
Most of War or combat is spent waiting for the battle to begin. This is an excellent example how war is fought.
Watch the vignettes the little nuances the Phillipano mother, the cook, the torpedomen the looks on the actors faces. Watch the whole movie examine each scene. There is a lot to this film to see and observe.
I watched it twice on TCM this weeknd and wow it was worth it.
Experience and age will teach you a lot.

This great fact-based film shows the tedious, unglamorous, & dangerous nature of war from the perspective of the patrol boat squadrons. The film & Robert Montgomery’ s character “Lt. John Brickley” are based on the WWII exploits of LT John Bulkeley, a medal of honor winner who retired as a Vice Admiral. Another WWII PT boat commander was John F Kennedy. In 2001, the Navy honored Bulkeley by naming a guided missile destroyer named for him (DDG 84). For more info on the ship USS BULKELEY or the man, you can visit one of these sites: http://www.bulkeley.navy.mil/ or http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/navy/ddg-84.htm
Note that there is a PT boat on the Destroyer’s crest.

If you thought this was the most boring movie ever then I would never have you pick up something at the video store for me thats for sure.

Only thing a person has to do is pay some attention as this is not the normal made during the war flag waving cheer up the homeland movie. This movie is actually very fact based movie technecialy, with some great rare footage of real 80' Echo class PTs standing in for the 78' Higgins that where uses in the Phillpines.

Maybe it was the lack of fancy computer special effects, blood and gore and all the foul language that modern movies have to rely on to keep the young of todays attention.

This movie is full of classic lighting effects, good writing, and something that even after 9/11 this country lacks, a sense of America first and patriotism.

I pity thise such a smallattention span that they can not see the quality of this movie.
