Shockingly cheap and cheesy ending

When the movie ends I was shocked and then disappointed. A dream? The girlfriend just returns, and off course the wedding was cancelled last minute? He goes with her right in the spot when he said previously that he had to look after her troubled sisters? The happy ending renders all the premise senseless...

He could hang herself full of regret for having indirectly killed his sisters. Maybe a bit dark but at least, if all was a dream, a better ending IMO would have been that he lefts, alone, and full of sad for letting his sisters (especially the old one, Hester) and the old family house, but to find himself out there, to grow up.

The ending was such a cop-out which ruined an otherwise good movie. At first I thought he was about to commit suicide so he didn’t need to live out his life knowing what he had done. When he poured out the poison I just assumed he changed his mind. Then when his ex came in I assumed that she had left her husband and was coming back to him but he wouldn’t be able to take her back out since he no longer felt worthy of her love. But when the sister showed up I was thinking what the hell is going on.

Yeah, the ending is terrible, but I liked the film up until that point.
