Scary?

Am I the only person to have found this film a wee bit disturbing?

reply

Yes, I found it disturbing, especially the way the seemed to have the camera on Dorian Gray for a few seconds when he's just staring and not saying anything than one wanted in which it gave it a creepy effect. I also found Dorian's face at the end creepy as well for some reason.

It scared the *beep* out of me as a kid. I was only little though. I have only had two TV/film related nightmares - this film (at the end with the grotesque painting) and the Daleks. I used to watch loads of horror films such as 'Friday the 13th' and 'nightmare on elm street' but the only things to really scare me was a tincan and an oscar wilde story?!

reply

shepherdspie7, you are far from the only person to find this film a bit disturbing! This was by far the most scariest I ever saw in my 50plus years of my life and that grotesque 'n' hideous pic of the old Dorian Gray still gives me the shivers to this day! I had talks and my friends told me they were more scared by the old Dorian Gray on the floor at the ending than they were by that hideous portrait.

I saw this movie 40 years ago when I was 18 and went in my parent's room and slept on the foot of their bed!! It scared the daylights out of me.

reply

definley the picture changing was very scary to me and episcally the end

Where did the dog sleep that night?

Been having weird dreams again. And it got me wondering who people think the scariest movie villains are. I'd say:
Zombie Michael (Thriller)
Sewer Zombie (Thriller)
Zombie In Very Final Frame (Thriller)
Baron Samedi (Live & Let Die)
Dorien Grey (The Picture Of Dorien Gray)
Freddy Krueger (Nightmare On Elm Street)
Jason Voorhees (Friday The 13th)
Michael Myers (Halloween)

You know, you go to the Thriller board, and many people there attest to the nightmares & trauma they had over watching it. I never got that, I guess it never really scared me.

I have only just managed to obtain this movie on DVD; a classic movie but I did not find it scary.

My dad told me many times that one of the scariest things he could remember from his childhood was when he was about 10 and went to the movies to see The Picture of Dorian Gray. He said that when they first showed the corrupted painting in full color, they way they did it so abruptly with that really loud musical stinger, everyone in the theater jumped 10 feet out of their seats.

reply

I'll bet! My mum has the book by Oscar Wilde and the cover is Dorian's face, half normal and half corrupt, tinged with this greeny colour. Terrifying!

reply

Not, just you. This film had an eerie undertone to it that the new film wasn't able to capture. Even the music creeped me out big time!

I saw this when I was about 10 (and I had seen IT earlier that year, 1990). I had a nightmare one night with the guy from Dorian Guy and the IT character arm and arm saying "we scared you"...I'd say its scary (especially for kids).

reply

It is a spooky film. The first time I saw the portrait I found it disturbing and of course the ending.
