Did they just not trust Flynn with ammo, even blanks? Nearly every time the men are on the move in the jungle, wither or not he's carrying the Carbine or the Thompson that the continuity guy didn't catch him switching back and forth to, it doesn't have a magazine in it. You can easily see it when the first Japanese patrol passes and he signals with the Tommygun you can see it doesn't have a mag in it. Only when there might be a fight does he have a magazine.

Wow..I've seen this movie a dozen times and never noticed that. Yup...when he gives the 'Fan Out' arm signal he is carrying a Thompson, with no magazine. I always remember him carrying only the M1A1 folding stock.

That kind of continuity probably wasn't as much of a concern because they figured most people would only see the movie once, and of course they wouldn't be able to pause or rewind.
