Did anyone else laugh out loud when they showed Kay's dying face?

Was this film SUPPOSED to be campy? Because it is. Maybe it's emblematic of films from 1945, but certain scenes were veritably dripping with camp. When they showed the younger daughter's dying face and she cries out, "Mother" I actually laughed out loud. And then the doctor sort of blurts out, "Oh...I...did everything I could but she didn't make it." It was like something out of the movie Airplane!

HARUMPH!

reply

Considering it was the worthier daughter who died - no, I didn't.

reply

NO, but the film was not meant for the youngsters of today who feel something is "campy" if it's not downplayed to the point of boredom, or has true emotion in it. If you didn't find anything to snicker at, you'd find it bad also, I know.

Nope....you're by yourself on this one. Most normal people don't laugh at a child who is dying; even if it is portrayed in an original classic film...that is not and has never been perceived as campy!

"OOhhhooo....I'M GON' TELL MAMA!"

reply

Yeah people dying is funny. if you have no soul.

Who gave the OP the right to make fun of this masterpiece? Did he even understand the plot of the film??? How dare you pretend to be above everything made in 1945, as if you're some great director or actor. You never even knew any movie stars! I was a close friend of Joan and she would have broken into tears had she been alive to read your insensitive, idiotic post. I knew her very well and I know for a fact she gave her heart and soul to make this film great! She told me herself, when I was doing her nails.

Don't worry, I ain't on the side of saints yet.

edjamesmiller......Thank you for sharing your association with Ms. Crawford. That particular scene was so heartbreaking...and both Ms. Crawford and the girl did an excellent job.

I think you need to refrain from watching classic movies until you're a bit more mature.

reply

No. You have a very strange sense of humor, gov.

I didn't think it was a funny moment, but I definitely felt that Mildred's response to her child dying seemed almost subdued. She should've freaked out at the deathbed, instead of just sniffling and choking out a few sobs. That was her baby, after all. And five minutes later, she's sitting in the living room like nothing happened. Huh?

reply

No!

reply

Um, no, I didn't laugh at all. That was a genuinely sad scene.
