a good film...

A bit under-rated IMHO.

Needs a good restoration however...

there seem to be several different versions of this tale, one is a movie made a few years after this titled "captain kidd and the slave girl" which almost sounds like a sequel in a rather funny plot description and without a single post on its board, seems weird (spoiler follows) it would be a sequel but i don't know how freely they interpret this story and after all you never actually see him get hanged here, all implied considering the age of the movie i thought, i'm not sure if this is a common feeling, but personally i've always found movies on this theme of ships and piracy at sea incredibly boring, i know the genre of western movies gives off this same vibe for some, and also this is shot in that dark photography which often people get bugged by. charles laughton seem to look different in every movie he's in, at least the ones i've come across, often heavily made up to change his face with far out features including hair style and costumes, he comes off as sort not fitting for this time and appears too wild for movies of this era, i don't mean it as a negative, it's a pleasure to watch his act, great screen presence, he sort of brings life to this picture which at least i otherwise found a bit dull, but what absurd funny dialogue he delivers at several times, you might wanna know he plays this role again in an abbott and costello movie ("abbott and costello meet captain kidd"). the line up where they are about to sign, pretty early in the movie, reminded a lot of the scene in "blazing saddles" where the villain was gathering the roughest people to be found. i don't know if it's because how it is shot, but a lot in the outside scenery appears as props actually.

form heartbeats you speak capture with lust,
to then fry in powerful love,
mysterious hold on soul put light on,
