My 6 year old was making fun of Liz Taylor's acting

We saw this yesterday and she couldn't believe what a bad actor she was. Every time she would cast her gaze heavenward and go on about how much she loves the Pie, my little girl would start giggling uncontrollably and would look away in embarrassment.

reply

That's so mean!

reply

Hey, she's just calling them like she sees them.

reply

I don't believe jgroub and his fish story, it was a movie all children loved!
even now in 2007!

Smack her upside the head. American brat. Tell her that this is a great performance. Then send her to bed without her gin.

reply

Well, I won't be doing any smacking, because, frankly, I agree with her.

Yes, acting was different back then, and thank god it's gotten better now.

In response to your advice, I did ask my daughter to do her impression of Liz Taylor, and she did it spot on. As for teaching her manners, I think that expressing how you feel about someone's acting is perfectly acceptable. It's obvious that you don't.

I don't agree with that statement....a lot of times, I watch stuff, and I go ewwww, the acting is so bad...

while in older movies...I think that it's pretty good...

susan

and yes...if the child doesn't agree with the acting, so what......everyone is entitled to their opionion.....

I don't think that all of today's actors, are all that great....anyway...so

reply

and yes, I knolw that the child would be what 16 years old now.....if she does exist, like some say, she doesn't....lol...

and does she still feel the same way...

she her later liz works.....now that she's older.....

Uh…it has NOT gotten better. Generally speaking, acting today has a monotone and robotic quality that takes away from the conveyance of emotion. This trend seems to have come about in the 2000’s. Not to say there isn’t standout talent now. Acting was probably most natural in the 70’s-90’s era. At least dramatic style acting doesn’t take away the humanity of the characters.

I am over 30 and could not stop giggleing at the part where she was "ridding the horse" in bed.

I think a lot of the problem is watching a movie when it is not new, because as someone said before, things change a lot. I know one of the movies I love the most from the 80s is still a great movie to me but a very lame movie to someone who uis just seeing it now.

Elizabeth Taylor was a TRUE talent!! People today CAN'T ACT unless they're outside the United States!!

You are obviously mental not to think that new films have better acting than older films. Mental, or snobbishly immature. Elizabeth Taylor was arguably the greatest actress of the 1950s, and one of the best the industry has ever seen. She is an inspiration to anyone with a brain or some taste. second the united states comment princessmagical!

Sounds to me like the daughter is well on her way to being a typical young person of today- cynical, shallow and selfish.

Today's youth are raised on a diet of trashy movies produced with them in mind- full of sex, violence and bad acting.
Way to go, Mom. Don't bother to teach her about the good old days when movies had good story lines about decent people with morals.

Your child is very astute. It IS a horrible performance, and stinks as a movie, too. And this has nothing to with it being "old". I am a classic film lover since childhood, and even when I saw this as a kid, I thought it stunk. It has nothing at all to do with the wonderful book, either :/

reply

Actually, I think Liz Taylor's performance in this particular film was both very moving and convincing. If you want to see truly bad acting, imagine SHIRLEY TEMPLE in this role!

However, I do think Velvet's *ahem* "passion" for the Pi is a wee bit over the top at times - I think her love for the horse is supposed to be a subtle metaphor for pre-adolescent sexual awakening and, there are several strong hints that Velvet is "in love" with Pi (hence, the dramatic eye-rolling and palpitating sighs whenever she utters his name). This may be what your little girl is reacting to (overly dramatic expressions of romantic love ARE embarrassing - that's why I stopped watching soaps or reading Harlequin romances years ago). I blame the writers rather than Liz' performance, though - I think she simply performs the role as it was intended and, imbues the role with a believable radiance and joy.

LOL - you had probably better keep your daughter away from Vin Diesel movies. The poor thing will be rolling on the floor for days!!

reply

Thanks, Viv. You're absolutely right about the "overly dramatic expressions of romantic love" being embarrassing.

She actually has seen a couple of Shirley Temple pics, and has enjoyed them immensely. She really wanted to become a lot more "self-reliant" there for awhile. But I can't imagine Shirley in this role.

Okay, everyone.....

It's not "bad acting" nor is it "better" now...it's just different. I'm not saying everyone should fall in love with the acting of this movie, but it was a different style then than now. Maybe some feel it is better now, but in reality, it is just different and everyone in the film was simply following a.) directions and b.) the style of the time. I'm not blaming a 6-year-old, by the way. Sometimes, it can be hard to wonder how overacting was ever in style, but apparently it was. My point is that wasn't necessarily just the actors' fault.

But that's me.

I actualy liked the way she acted in the movie. I find it a bit hard for a six year old to know a good acting from bad acting with a movie like that. I mean when i was six i like some pretty bad movies and when i got older my mind changed and i relized how bad the movies actualy were even though i still liked those movies.

Natalie Wood could have played the role, had she been born 6 or 8 years earlier. Lest you doubt me, check out her performance in 1946's " Tomorrow is Forever ". You will be nothing short of astounded. Finest performance by a child actor I'VE ever seen!

I can't believe that at 6 she understood what bad acting was. I totally disagree, I thought Liz Taylor was perfect for the role and did a great job. She was really passionate about horses so I guess I could see bout the scenes that seemed over the top. Great movie.

reply

I think it is bad acting aswell...ofcourse, I think the overly dramatic love was part of it...and the fact the horses name was pi...but I dislike the acting of that time because I've never ever met anyone who talked like that even my sister who was ridiculously obsessed with horses and pretended to ride them.

I don't think anyone's six year old kid is a good judge of anybody's acting let alone Elizabeth Taylor.

This movie was filmed in the 40's and set in the 20's and your 6 yr old can't identify with anything in the film: the love of an animal, England in the 20's, or 40's cinema.

There were moments that came off silly but in any animal movie you are bound to get those and it's unfair to center that blame on Liz Taylor's performance.

reply

Well, I will agree with you about Liz Taylor. You're right; it's not so much that she was making fun of Liz Taylor's acting in particular, but the style of acting, especially kid acting, that was prevalent at the time. So, I apologize if it seems like I'm singling her out in particular.

But I disagree about being 6 and not being able to judge other's acting. I remember very well watching shows with kid actors when I was that age and thinking how much they sucked. And that was in the early 70s.

Man, I can't believe this thread is still around! My daughter's almost 8 now!
