Special Duty

Any educated guesses on what the nature of Joe's Special Duty orders might have been? I mean, he was from Burbank and he was carrying a giant propeller, so it's safe to say it had something to do with what was then the Army Air Corps. But I wonder if any WWII buffs could hypothesize about anything more specific. Was it likely that he saw combat when he was sent over to Africa?

The United States joined the fight against Axis forces in Africa in November, 1942. What an airplane propellor and "Special Duty" have to do with this is wide open to speculation. I doubt the screenwriters would have had any insider information on U.S. military activities at the time.
